  • The Institute advises the government and its agencies though its representatives on the statutory bodies.
  • It communicates to the public, on biological matters having implications for society, through public lectures symposia and seminars on general biological topics, specialised subjects and techniques.
  • The Institute has, since its foundation, made a significant contribution to the national curricula for biology in both second and third level education.
  • The Institute organises Biology Today Programmes. These one day lecture programmes and demonstrations by professional biologists for post-primary students form a very important part of the Institute communication role.
  • The Institute supports and sponsors meetings of biological interest.
  • The Institute encourages entrants to the profession of biology through the dissemination of career information for school leavers.
