Dr Con O’Rourke: A major contributor to the Institute of Biology of Ireland Dr Con O’Rourke (1936-2019), son to Tomás O’Rourke and Ruby Sheehan, is sadly missed by his loving wife Anne, daughters Niamh and Maeve and son Brían, his extended family and his many friends. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
The Institute of Biology of Ireland (IBIOLI) awarded Gold Medals to each of five 2018 Leaving Certificate Biology students at a ceremony in the National Botanic Gardens on November 29th 2018.
Globally, more than 250 million people suffer from a food allergy with more than 17 million people suffering from food allergies in Europe alone. Food allergy cases have risen by up to 50% in the past decade, with a 700% rise in hospitalisations due to anaphylaxis.
Dr Siobhan Jordan, presented a lecture on March 24th in DCU, on “Biotechnology and creativity – reflections on multidisciplinary degrees”, in conjunction with Dublin City University and the Institute of Biology of Ireland. Siobhan gave an inspiring account of how successful collaborations can be forged between industry and academics and how her multi-disciplinary training assisted her in developing this focused approach in Scotland.
The Professor Michael Hennerty 2016 Memorial Prize and Medal award ceremony took place at the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science on Thursday 17th November. There were 13 awards in total.
Friday night, November 18th 2016, marked The Institute of Biology of Ireland’s annual awards to the highest performing students in this year’s Leaving Certificate Biology examination. This activity is just one of the many engaged in by the Institute (www.ibioli.net) to disseminate and encourage interest in Biology at all levels in Ireland.
Report on Lecture, “In Search of Sanctuary! Is it in the biologist’s contract to inform and lead public policy and law towards environmental sustainability?”, Brendan Price, the founder of the Irish Seal Sanctuary, and marine and wildlife advocate, stimulated the audience with his obvious commitment to the role of biologists in promoting environmental sustainability. He enthused everyone present as he presented photographic evidence of his personal engagement with the range of focal points where Sanctuary was the theme.
The second of two reports on the IBIOLI members visit to Birr Castle Demesne, Co. Offaly, on July 16th 2016. At Birr, there is an extensive science centre with exhibitions covering the Parson’s family’s achievements in astronomy, engineering, philosophy, photography, and botany.
The first of two reports on the IBIOLI’s excursion to Birr Castle Gardens and the Birr Telescope, on July 16th 2016. Invigorated by the wonderful offerings at the Birr Castle Cafe we set off on our tour of the beautiful gardens and en-route came upon the magnificent six foot diameter telescope nestling there.
