Dr Con O’Rourke: A major contributor to the Institute of Biology of Ireland Dr Con O’Rourke (1936-2019), son to Tomás O’Rourke and Ruby Sheehan, is sadly missed by his loving wife Anne, daughters Niamh and Maeve and son Brían, his extended family and his many friends. Globally, more than 250 million people suffer from a food allergy with more than 17 million people suffering from food allergies in Europe alone. Food allergy cases have risen by up to 50% in the past decade, with a 700% rise in hospitalisations due to anaphylaxis.
Dr Siobhan Jordan, presented a lecture on March 24th in DCU, on “Biotechnology and creativity – reflections on multidisciplinary degrees” , in conjunction with Dublin City University and the Institute of Biology of Ireland. Siobhan gave an inspiring account of how successful collaborations can be forged between industry and academics and how her multi-disciplinary training assisted her in developing this focused approach in Scotland.
