The Institute of Biology of Ireland, as part of its Activity Series 2015, invites its members and general public to this lecture. In this this lecture, Dr Mary J. O’Connell, School of Biotechnology, DCU, will speak about what happens to living organisms when catastrophe strikes and will also see some important features that are key to survival.
The day, Saturday June 6th, was our planned visit to the Great Saltee Island, just over 5km off the coast of Wexford; this was Activity No 6 of the IBIOLI Activity Series for 2015. The Great Saltee is the most famous bird sanctuary in Ireland and is very popular with both day-trippers and birdwatchers alike.
Members and friends of the Institute of Biology of Ireland, and members of the public congregated at the entrance to the Natural History Museum, Merrion St., Dublin 2, at 2 pm on Saturday, May 16th. The occasion was activity number 5 of the Activity Series 2015 of IBIOLI – a guided tour of the “Dead Zoo” under the leadership of Dr Nigel Monaghan, Keeper of the Museum.
The IBIOLI invites its members, families, friends and general public to join us on a family-friendly Dual Activity Day to Glasnevin Cemetery and Museum, and to the National Botanic Gardens. Choose from ONE or BOTH activities. Both tours are family-friendly events.
On the 6th of May, 2015, the Institute of Biology of Ireland (IBIOLI) members were again warmly welcomed by Richard Morris on behalf of BurrenBeo (www.burrenbeo.com), the organisers of today’s walk. This was was part of the Burren in Bloom series of walks and talks.
On Sunday morning, May 3rd 2015 at 5.30am, 52 interested ‘birdwatchers’ gathered outside the Village Store in Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare for the annual Dawn Chorus event. The event, which was organized by BurrenBeo Trust (www.burrenbeo.com), warmly welcomed members of The Institute of Biology of Ireland (www.ibioli.net) to join them. Gordon D’Arcy, the well-known and respected ornithologist, led the group around the local Turlough, Lough Rask.
A report from the field visit to the Botanic Gardens KiIlmacurragh. A bright sun and a sweeping avenue lined with deep red Himalayan rhododendrons (Rhodendron ferrugineum) in full flower set the scene of a memorable visit for the IBIOLI members to the Botanic Gardens.

The IBIOLI, as part of its Activity Series 2015, invites its members, friends and members of the public to a one-day family-friendly visit to the Greatest Bird Sanctuary in Ireland, on the Great Saltee Island, off Wexford Coast. The island is very popular with both day-trippers and birdwatchers alike. These Islands are privately owned and are one of the world’s major bird sanctuaries.
